Learn how to make traditional pompoms with Chato, our friend and master pompom maker! Feel free to use whatever yarn you have at hand, and we'll go step-by-step from yarn to pompom.

If you'd like to use the same naturally-dyed cotton that we work with, order a Pompom Kit here, including two sample poms made by Chato. We find it's helpful to have a sample or two to feel just how densely packed these pompoms are.

Traditionally, pompoms of this style are attached to the ends of headdresses in the small highland town of Chajul in the Ixil region, and are used to adorn women's hair with bursts of color. They hang beautifully and are just so darn adorable.

This class is appropriate for adults and children working together with adults. Join the fun as a family if you'd like! Pre-class email with Zoom information will be sent during the week of the class. Please make sure to calculate time difference, the class will be held on Saturday, October 15th, from 10-11am Guatemala time.

Brew some tea or prepare a pot of cacao and let's get together for some crafty fun!

Maximum number of participants: 10 (Counted in Zoom sign-ins, feel free to join as a group for this session. We think it's a great family activity!)

Fun workshop

I thoroughly enjoyed this workshop in which I learnt to make a traditional chajul-style pompom. My first pompom was a bit wonky but they have improved. I am now on pompom number seven. Making pompoms is addictive! Try it.
