San Juan Cotzal

Full of traditional bird and other nature-inspired brocade designs, these weaves come from an established local cooperative in San Juan Cotzal. The Ixil region is quite rural, and of all the communities where our partner artisans are from, Cotzal is probably the most remote. And the barriers the weavers face are more than just geographical... we hope that we do their handwoven works of art justice here in digital form.

Curious about the meaning behind the beautiful brocade figures? We translated what the weavers said here on our blog.
